Innovating Pavilion Design with BŌK Modern Canopies

BŌK Modern introduces its SPG Pavilion, showcasing a groundbreaking approach to pavilion design through the utilization of its innovative canopy system. This multi-family residential construction project demonstrates the application of BŌK Modern’s engineering prowess and design philosophy, resulting in a cost-effective yet visually striking pavilion structure.

Redefining Pavilion Construction

Drawing from the success of its “Moscone” system, previously showcased in the award-winning Moscone Convention Center project, BŌK Modern employs a similar approach in the SPG Pavilion. By leveraging aluminum panels staggered to support each other structurally, the pavilion achieves structural stability while maintaining a visually appealing floating trellis design. This unique system not only reduces construction costs significantly but also establishes a cohesive identity for the entire project.

Engineering Ingenuity

The original design envisioned a steel-framed pavilion with infilled aluminum panels. However, BŌK Modern’s engineering team identified an opportunity to streamline the structure by suspending panels from four central masts, eliminating the need for substantial steel framing. This engineering feat, achieved through BŌK Modern’s rod and clevis canopy design theory, showcases the studio’s commitment to innovative yet practical solutions. The pavilion’s iconic floating illusion, achieved without visible structural elements beyond the central masts, serves as a testament to the team’s engineering prowess.

Modular Innovation

The SPG Pavilion exemplifies BŌK’s modular innovations, demonstrating the scalability and adaptability of its canopy systems. By inserting columns as needed, BŌK Modern can tailor its canopy designs to fit various architectural visions and project requirements. Moreover, the pavilion serves as a prime example of the studio’s design philosophy, which prioritizes simplicity, sustainability, and efficiency in structural design.
