A Beacon of Life: Library in the Valley
Nestled in the tranquil suburbs of Guangzhou lies the Tian Ren Shan Shui Land Art Community—a sprawling 15,000-acre sanctuary for health, leisure, and artistic endeavors. At its heart stands the Library in the Valley, a beacon of rejuvenation and vitality designed by the Design Center of Haoyuan Group. This architectural gem not only serves as a symbol of the community but also embodies the essence of regaining the value of life, particularly for the elderly residents.
Context and Inspiration
Situated within a triangular valley spanning approximately 1,000 square meters, the library’s design harmonizes with the surrounding landscape characterized by steep topography and verdant foliage. Drawing inspiration from the timeless film “Scent of a Woman,” where passion reignites in the face of despair, the architects envisioned the library as a homage to life’s fervor and resilience. The elegant and passionate tango depicted in the movie serves as a metaphor for the enthusiasm that permeates the community.
Architectural Form
The architectural form of the library is a study in simplicity and grace. Two distinct lines define its silhouette: a towering vertical wall symbolizing strength and resilience, and a sweeping curved roof reminiscent of the graceful movements of tango dancers. This fluid transition from horizontal to vertical echoes the dynamic interplay between vigor and serenity, mirroring the undulating contours of the surrounding hills.
Materiality and Craftsmanship
Constructed primarily from as-cast finish concrete, the library embodies a raw and unadorned aesthetic that accentuates its architectural form. The meticulous craftsmanship involved in shaping the hyperboloid roofs and gradient eaves posed a formidable challenge, requiring precision and innovation. Leveraging advanced technology, the designers translated intricate three-dimensional models into tangible formwork components, culminating in the creation of a flawless hyperboloid structure.
Serene Interior Sanctuary
Internally, the library envelops visitors in a tranquil ambiance characterized by towering concrete walls and an expansive roof pierced by a soaring vertical slit. Natural light cascades into the interior, imbuing the space with a sense of grandeur reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral. Here, amidst the hushed atmosphere, individuals are invited to immerse themselves in the pleasures of reading, contemplation, and introspection—a sanctuary for the mind and soul.
In essence, the Library in the Valley transcends its physical presence to become a testament to the indomitable spirit of life—an architectural marvel that not only enriches its surroundings but also serves as a sanctuary for the human spirit to flourish and thrive.
