Integrating Tradition and Modernity: Katsura Library at Kyoto University

Situated in the western part of Kyoto, the Faculty of Engineering of Kyoto University embarked on a transformative journey from its original campus at Hyakumanben to a new campus in Katsura. The meticulous planning of the Katsura campus aimed to uphold a cohesive aesthetic throughout, culminating in the proposal for a new library. Tasked with this endeavor in 2015, we embarked on a journey to create a space that seamlessly integrates into the campus while honoring the rich cultural heritage of Kyoto.

Initial Plans and Design Evolution

The initial plan prioritized maintaining the unobstructed view from the office wing towards the east, resulting in a low-rise structure that harmoniously extended from the existing office wing. However, subsequent revisions led to a downsized version of the original plan, necessitating a reimagining of the library’s functionalities. Despite these adjustments, our commitment to preserving key features such as the linear extension from the office wing and the panoramic view of Kyoto City remained unwavering.

Architectural Harmony and Campus Integration

Adhering to the mandate of the Katsura campus’s total plan, which stipulated the use of brick tiles for building exteriors, our design embraced this tradition while embodying modern sensibilities. We envisioned the library not as a standalone structure but as an integral part of the campus fabric, seamlessly blending into its surroundings. The choice of brick tiles, reminiscent of architectural norms prevalent in university campuses, symbolizes our endeavor to create an architecture that resonates with the ethos of the campus community.

Embracing Discreet Architecture

Unlike the Kyoto Institute of Technology, where architectural spaces deviated slightly from the campus’s overall image, the Katsura campus’s ongoing transition prompted us to adopt a more understated approach. Rather than striving for architectural grandeur, we sought to create a public space that serves as a harmonious backdrop for scholarly pursuits and communal gatherings. Our design philosophy revolves around setting the stage for a seamless integration of history and modernity, thereby fostering the evolution of this new campus.

In essence, the Katsura Library at Kyoto University stands as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between tradition and innovation. By seamlessly integrating into the campus landscape while embracing architectural elements rooted in Kyoto’s rich heritage, the library embodies the spirit of continuity and progress that defines Kyoto University’s journey into the future.
