The Building as an Educator

In line with the Reggio Emilia approach, which views the environment as a “third teacher,” the kindergarten’s design prioritizes children’s learning and development. Deliberate choices in form, light, color, and materials aim to stimulate imagination and sensory exploration. The building itself becomes a mentor, fostering safety, play, and learning through varied spatial contexts.

Architectural Adaptation

Inspired by traditional Norwegian granaries, the kindergarten features a wooden structure elevated on columns, reminiscent of a “stabbur.” Transparency characterizes the ground floor, offering views of outdoor play areas and the neighboring farm. The irregular wooden roof creates a dynamic interior with diverse rooms, while outdoor spaces on the roof extend the play areas.

Sustainable Design

Constructed primarily from cross-laminated timber (CLT), the kindergarten prioritizes sustainability. Translucent glass windows balance privacy and solar heat gain, while Norwegian Ore-pine clads the external walls. Passive solar heating and efficient area usage reduce energy consumption, supported by Oslo’s municipal heating system.

Interior Comfort

Cross-laminated timber interiors create a robust and inviting atmosphere, promoting a sense of warmth and homeliness. Wood’s natural properties contribute to a pleasant indoor climate, fostering children’s well-being and comfort. Research suggests that wooden buildings can positively affect children’s heart rates and withstand wear and tear gracefully.

Natural Outdoor Spaces

Embracing nature, outdoor areas feature natural materials like grass, bark, and gravel, encouraging sensory exploration and connection with the environment. Thoughtful zoning allows for various activities, including gardening and animal care, promoting social interaction and unstructured play.
