Café Camaleon A Vibrant Fusion of Functions

Design Concept and Context

Casa Camper Berlin, established in 2009, is nestled in Berlin Mitte, adjacent to a bustling shopping district. Originally, the ground floor of the building housed a separate commercial space. Seeking to realign with their design ethos, Camper enlisted MVRDV and GRAS Arquitectos to reimagine the lobby, retail area for Camper shoes, and restaurant.

Flexible Spatial Integration

Given the distinct occupancy patterns of each program, the architects envisioned a unified space capable of accommodating diverse functions. Thus, they conceived a flexible layout conducive to adaptability throughout the day and future requirements. Central to this design is an expansive 18-meter-long counter, serving as a focal point for customer engagement across all three functions.

Harmonious Color Palette

To delineate each program, a distinct color scheme was adopted: red for the hotel lobby, white for the retail showcase, and brown for the restaurant—a nod to German Milchkaffee. These colors seamlessly blend into one another, creating a gradient effect that pervades the space, evident in the flooring, walls, and counter. Inspired by this vibrant palette, the project is aptly named Camaleon, echoing the transformative nature of its appearance.

Material Expression and Transparency

Externally, a 12-meter-long glass facade establishes a welcoming connection with the street, inviting patrons inside. Internally, the color gradient is manifested through a variety of materials, including resin panels, printed wood, and cement-based floor tiles infused with recycled glass—a technique reminiscent of Mallorca, Camper’s place of origin.

Significance and Contextual Relevance

Café Camaleon marks MVRDV’s inaugural project in Berlin, signifying a significant milestone for the renowned architectural firm. With a rich history of engagement in Germany, including notable projects like the Berlin Voids and the Expo 2000 building in Hannover, the completion of Café Camaleon underscores MVRDV’s enduring commitment to architectural innovation and urban revitalization.
