Introduction

The Denver Art Museum (DAM) boasts an extensive architecture and design collection spanning centuries. To showcase this rich assortment, OMA collaborated with Machado Silvetti and Fentress Architects to create innovative design galleries and a studio space as part of a comprehensive museum renovation.

Inaugural Exhibitions

The DAM’s new design galleries house two inaugural exhibitions: “By Design: Stories and Ideas Behind Objects” and “Gio Ponti: Designer of a Thousand Talents.” These exhibitions feature over 400 objects and offer insights into the creative processes and narratives behind them. Additionally, the Ellen Bruss Design Studio provides visitors with a dynamic space to engage directly with design concepts and materials.

Urban Inspiration

Drawing inspiration from the urban grid of Denver and the architecture of Gio Ponti’s Martin building, the design of the galleries reflects an urban sensibility. Each space—the interactive Studio, piazza-like Design Gallery, and topographic Mezzanine Gallery—functions as a distinct yet interconnected zone, encouraging exploration akin to navigating city blocks.

Spatial Typologies

The Design Gallery, spanning 7,750 square feet, employs a logic of spatial typologies to showcase design objects. Featuring an open central “piazza” surrounded by perimeter rooms and islands, the gallery offers versatile display options. Modular platforms allow for easy reconfiguration, facilitating seamless transitions between exhibitions.

Ponti-inspired Design

In the 1,900-square-foot Mezzanine Gallery, Ponti’s design philosophy is reflected in floating abstract planes and shifted volumes. Mirrored surfaces on the ceiling enhance spatial depth, creating captivating visual layers. The gallery’s layout encourages dynamic interaction with displayed objects from various perspectives.

Adaptive Design Studio

The Design Studio embodies flexibility, with hinged walls enabling fluid configurations for diverse programs and activities. Ponti’s compositional techniques, such as partial planes, are integrated into workshop walls to organize displays effectively and spotlight interactive experiences.

Conclusion

The Denver Art Museum Design Galleries and Studio by OMA redefine the museum experience, offering visitors immersive exhibitions and interactive spaces that celebrate design innovation and creativity. With thoughtful design interventions inspired by both urban landscapes and architectural masters like Gio Ponti, this project sets a new standard for museum design exploration and engagement.
