Located in Tokyo’s prestigious Ginza district, COCOON Beauty Salon has been a fixture since its establishment in 2000. With 21 years of operation, the salon faced the challenge of adapting to the COVID-19 restrictions while maintaining its allure as a convenient and well-ventilated space.

Innovative Design Solutions

In response to the need for improved ventilation and accessibility, KAMITOPEN embarked on a redesign project for COCOON Beauty Salon. Situated beneath a railway viaduct—an unconventional location even for Ginza—the salon required a fresh approach to its layout and entrance design.

Redefining the Entry Experience

One of the key design decisions was the relocation of the salon’s counter, a fixture since its inception. Additionally, the architects introduced sliding doors to create a flexible entry point accessible from any direction. By eschewing a traditional facade in favor of a transparent glass panel at foot level displaying the salon’s name, they effectively communicated the salon’s presence and established a welcoming entrance.

Collaborative Interior Design

To infuse the salon’s interior with character and history, KAMITOPEN opted for mosaic tiles to adorn the walls. However, instead of completing the mosaic installation themselves, they devised a unique approach: inviting customers to purchase individual tiles and contribute to the salon’s decor by affixing them to the walls. This collaborative effort not only engages customers but also ensures that the salon’s 20-year legacy is perpetuated by those who visit.
