Situated along Ningbo’s Bund area, the Bund Post Office holds a significant place in history as the province’s inaugural postal establishment. Seeking to recapture its former glory and reassert its centrality within the community, the Bund Post Office embarked on a transformative journey to establish a new location on the banks of the Yongjiang River.

Blending Nostalgia with Innovation

To evoke a sense of nostalgia while embracing contemporary cultural interests, the Bund Post Office collaborated with “Nordic Books” to reimagine its role beyond traditional postal services. The new three-story premise seamlessly integrates the post counter, gift retail displays, and a versatile children’s play area, fostering an inclusive environment for community engagement.

Aesthetic Fusion: Tradition Meets Modernity

Nostalgic architectural elements blend harmoniously with a vibrant color palette of greens, whites, and rich reds, breathing new life into historical references within a contemporary context. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a double-height atrium adorned with a dynamic white staircase, clad in perforated metal mesh, offering both visual intrigue and functional utility.

Multi-Purpose Spaces: Catering to Community Needs

Each floor of the Bund Post Office serves a distinct purpose, from retail displays to reading booths and children’s play areas. The second floor features crimson display shelves and cozy reading nooks, while the third floor offers a private event space inspired by rooftop gardens, fostering creativity and community interaction.

Redefining the Role of the Post Office

Challenged to reimagine the post office’s role within the community, the project team embraced the concept of celebration as a central theme. By integrating gift retail, cultural events, and children’s play spaces, the Bund Post Office transforms into a vibrant hub for social connection and seasonal festivities.

In its completed form, the Bund Post Office transcends its traditional function, becoming a dynamic space where visitors can not only send and receive mail but also share gifts, memories, and experiences. By embracing innovation while honoring tradition, the Bund Post Office emerges as a beacon of community engagement in a modern urban landscape.
