Situated in the northwest corner of Jinji Hongwu Science and Technology Innovation Industrial Park, Nanjing, the Jidijiangyi Studio by FANAF stands as a testament to the renewal of historical industrial remnants in the heart of the city. Formerly the site of the Jinling Machinery Factory, this project embodies the transformation of aging industrial structures into vibrant hubs of creativity and innovation.

Embracing Industrial Heritage

Originally serving as the power distribution room of the old factory, the building underwent a comprehensive transformation to revitalize its aesthetic and functionality. The façade renovation strategy, characterized by a restrained approach, preserves the building’s original shape and color while introducing subtle texture variations through German STO exterior wall paint.

Spatial Adaptation and Connectivity

The interior layout maintains the original entrance relationship while introducing new spatial connections to enhance functionality and visual continuity. By removing partition walls and expanding window surfaces, the design blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a seamless transition between the two.

Human-Centric Design

The design prioritizes human comfort and interaction, with carefully curated spaces that evoke a sense of warmth and familiarity. Low ceilings and open layouts in the reception area foster a welcoming atmosphere, reminiscent of a residential setting, while large-scale ceilings conceal technical equipment, ensuring a clutter-free environment.

Structural Expression

Structural elements such as red horizontal beams and cylindrical vertical structures serve as visual focal points, highlighting the building’s industrial heritage. The incorporation of solar panels between partition blocks enhances transparency and sustainability, further enriching the spatial experience.

Harmonizing Urban Renewal

As part of the larger urban renewal initiative, the studio embodies a shift towards mixed-use developments that integrate commerce, office spaces, and leisure amenities. This holistic approach fosters a symbiotic relationship between the industrial park and surrounding residential communities, creating a dynamic and harmonious urban environment.

Conclusion

The Jidijiangyi Studio by FANAF exemplifies the adaptive reuse of industrial heritage, breathing new life into historic structures while embracing contemporary design principles. Through thoughtful spatial planning and material interventions, the project celebrates the past while paving the way for a vibrant future in Nanjing’s evolving urban landscape.
