MLK1101 Supportive Housing A Community Transformation
Addressing Homelessness in Los Angeles
With over 58,000 individuals experiencing homelessness, Los Angeles County faces a significant housing crisis. Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) tackles this issue head-on with the design of MLK1101 Supportive Housing, converting a vacant lot in South Los Angeles into a vibrant community for formerly homeless individuals. The project offers 26 units of permanent, 100% affordable housing to veterans, chronically homeless individuals, and low-income households.
Designing for Health and Community
LOHA’s LEED Gold design prioritizes health and community, incorporating strategies to foster social interaction and well-being. The L-shaped typology ensures ample sunlight and cross ventilation in every apartment, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting and heating. An elevated green patio provides residents with a tranquil space to relax and socialize away from street noise, promoting a sense of community within the neighborhood.
Sustainable and Inclusive Features
MLK1101 Supportive Housing embraces environmentally responsible design with features such as high-efficiency heating and cooling, solar water heating, and electric vehicle charging. The street-level parking is cleverly utilized to create an elevated community garden, serving as a social hub for residents and neighbors alike. Retail units at street level not only generate income to subsidize housing but also provide workforce training opportunities for residents.
Promoting Social Integration
The design emphasizes street presence, with parking tucked behind a storefront space and a widened staircase connecting to community spaces above. This stoop serves as a gathering space, encouraging interaction between residents and neighbors—a crucial element often lacking in supportive housing. Tenants are encouraged to use shared amenities like the community room and outdoor garden, fostering a sense of belonging and social engagement.
Supporting Diverse Needs
MLK1101 Supportive Housing offers a range of unit sizes to accommodate individuals and families, each equipped with kitchens and living spaces. Shared amenities include kitchen and dining areas for cooking classes and group activities, further promoting community engagement. Exterior walkways provide access to all units, while varying widths create dynamic elevations and informal gathering spaces for residents.
Building on Success
Drawing on previous experience with supportive housing organizations, LOHA’s design builds on the success of integrating diverse populations and providing on-site supportive services. MLK1101 Supportive Housing exemplifies a holistic approach to addressing homelessness, creating uplifting living environments where individuals can thrive and communities can flourish.
